The Global RIver-lanD (GRID) project brings together river hydrogeochemistry, watershed properties, and derived research products to support Earth-surface science. Linking river observations with environmental context helps researchers investigate weathering, elemental transport, water quality, and human influences on river systems.
GRID at a glance
As of October 19, 2026, the project inventory includes 154,577 sites, 91 hydrogeochemical variables, and 139 watershed properties drawn from 19 property sources.
These are project-wide totals. Variable availability, sampling periods, and watershed information differ among sites. The inventory includes more material than the public releases linked on this website; the totals do not imply that every record is publicly downloadable. Explore coverage and scope.
From observations to reusable research products
GRID outputs connect compiled observations and watershed information with derived datasets and analysis code. Released examples address river salinization and alkalinization, river–ocean connections, and rock-weathering fluxes. They show how integrated data can support geochemical modeling and AI-enabled discovery.
Browse data and code highlights for each product’s scope, methods, creators, license, and persistent identifier. Read about methods and interpretation to distinguish observations, derived estimates, and model predictions.
Access and participation
Published releases are available through their repository records. Start with Data Access to download them. For access to other GRID holdings or collaboration on a specific research question, contact the project team.
We welcome contributions of river observations and associated metadata. Contribute data to discuss scope, provenance, reuse permissions, and release timing with the team.
